Elongases

“Elongases”

In lipid science, Elongases are enzymes which lengthen fatty acids by adding two carbon atoms to the fatty acid's carboxylic acid end.
In enzyme science, Elongases can be any enzyme that catalyzes the elongation of an aliphatic chain, but especially one that elongates a fatty acid. Chain elongation of fatty acids is an important cellular process, believed to occur in the endoplasmic reticulum of all eukaroytic cells.
The elongase gene family includes the following genes:
