Eye with Cornea     In and on our body's eyes, the Cornea is a complex, multilayered, multifunctional structure that provides photo protection, refraction, and transparency and helps protect internal ocular structures.

In our body, the cornea is the transparent anterior portion of the fibrous coat consisting of five layers covering the iris, pupil, and anterior chamber.
    In our body's eyes, the fixed focused of the Cornea refracts light and is responsible for most of the eye's focusing power, along with the help of the anterior chamber and our adjustable focused eye lens (lens of the eye) ability. *

“Cornea Layers”  
    In our body's eyes, the cornea consists of five layers from the anterior to posterior the five layers of the human cornea are: the stratified squamous corneal epithelium, bowman membrane (bowman's membrane), corneal stroma, descemet membrane (descemet's membrane), and mesenchymal corneal endothelium (anterior chamber endothelium).

“Corneal Epithelium”  
    In our eyes's cornea, the outermost layer Corneal Epithelium is a smooth stratified squamous epithelium that covers the outer surface of the cornea playing a significant role in maintaining transparency.
    In our eyes's cornea, the Corneal Epithelium contains many free nerve endings and undergoes continuous self-renewal, through the actions of the stem cells in the palisades of Vogt in the corneal limbus (corneoscleral junction).
    In our body's eyes, Corneal Epithelium undergoes continuous self-renewal in the basal limbal epithelium, through the actions of the stem cells in the palisades of Vogt in the corneal limbus (corneoscleral junction).

In our body's eyes, Corneal Epithelium migrate centripetally from the periphery to the center of the corneal surface, a renewal phenomenon attributed to stem cells that located at the corneal limbus (limbus corneae) where basal cells contain a subpopulation of stem cells characterized by high capacity of self-renewal, slow cell cycle, and high proliferative potential following damage or wound.

    In our body's eyes, the Bowman Membrane (Bowman's Membrane) is a layer of a cellular matrix that lies beneath the corneal epithelium and above the corneal stroma.

    In our body's eyes, the Corneal Stroma (Corneal Proper Substance) is the stromal cells of lamellated connective tissue, constituting the thickest layer of the cornea between the bowman membrane (bowman's membrane) and the descemet membrane (descemet's membrane).

Descemet Membrane

    In our body's eyes, the Descemet Membrane (Descemet's Membrane), a basement membrane and one of the five layers of a cornea, is a homogeneous structure composed of fine collagenous filament (collagen type IV), that lies between the corneal stroma (corneal proper substance), and the single endothelial layered corneal endothelium (anterior chamber endothelium).
